PCA 2022 Report: Codio Cigars

While Codio Cigars is a newcomer to the Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show, the company is not new to the premium cigar business. Codio Cigars is a family-owned business that has been active for 60 years in the Dominican Republic. In addition to making their own cigars, they grow their own tobacco. Codio Cigars has a retail operation in Clifton, NJ and has sold many of its family-made cigars there. This year the company showcased all of its cigars at the 2022 PCA Trade Show, but in particular, it was highlighting three new releases. One was for Fausto Codio's 50th birthday which took place last September. Fausto talked with us about his "My 50th Birthday" cigar, but there were also two other cigars showcased at PCA 2022.

PCA 2022 Report: Quesada Cigars (Audio)

There was certainly a lot of energy and excitement at the Quesada booth at the 2022 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show. Not only was Quesada Cigars' President Manuel "Manolo" Quesada in attendance, but there were several new and intriguing releases. The Quesadas announced a new addition to the Casa Magna family, the continuing tradition of Oktoberfest, and that Manolo himself has a limited edition cigar to celebrate his 75th birthday. All of these things resulted in a very busy booth for Quesada Cigars throughout the entire four days of the Trade Show.

PCA 2022 Report: Quesada Cigars

PCA 2022 Report: Toscano Cigars (Audio)

Toscano Cigars is the signature brand of Manifatture Cigar Toscano, a company based out of Italy. This is a company that has been in business for over 200 years. They are known for their conical-shaped cigars containing Italian and U.S. tobaccos - particularly tobaccos that are fire-cured. For the past few years the company has been working on expanding its presence in the U.S. market - and has made significant strides. This year, Toscano unveiled a new three-blend series called Master Aged. Master Aged makes use of an expanded aging and maturation process.

PCA 2022 Report: Room101 Cigars(Audio)

Matt Booth's Room101 Cigars would commemorate its 13th anniversary at the 2022 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show. Of course there is a 13th anniversary cigar to mark the occasion. However there were some other themes going on at Room101's booth. First up, the company would go "Nicaragua" releasing three Nicaraguan puros made in Nicaragua. The other story would be that this was Matt Booth's first Trade Show where he was no longer a brand owner. Just prior to the Trade Show, Booth would sell his cigar brand to Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG). Booth's Room101 brand would become a part of STG's Forged Cigar Company and Booth would join STG as a Creative Director. Booth had already been working with STG, and there were a couple of STG projects he already put his footprint on - namely the relaunch of Sancho Panza and Los Statos Deluxe. Although no orders were taken from Sancho Panza and Los Statos Deluxe, the products were showcased at the Trade Show. Meanwhile there were several members of the STG team at the Room101 booth - essentially giving STG a Trojan horse into the show.  The important thing - whether it was Camacho, Davidoff, Caldwell, La Palina or STG, Booth remained true to his roots and continues to show a genuine love of the cigar industry.

Pospiech Cigars is the operation run by Mike and Greg Szczepankiewicz out of Deltona, Florida where they also have their Cigar Hustler retailer operation and Hustler Universe Podcasts. Pospiech is best known for the Powstanie Cigars made at RoMa Craft Tobac's Nica Sueño factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. This year they returned to the Premium Cigar Association (PCA)Trade Show after a one year absence. This time they had their own booth after being a part of RoMa Craft Tobac's booth for several years. In addition to Powstanie, Pospiech also handles distribution for Metul Shah's Fable Cigars, and has done several collaboration brands with the likes of Espinosa and Room101 Cigars. Pospiech didn't have any new offerings to showcase, but said it was much more important to show support for the PCA at the 2022 show. As we talked to Mike Szczepankiewicz, he emphasized how this was the right thing to do.

PCA 2022 Report: Oliva Cigar Co. (Audio)

One of the biggest stories of the 2022 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show was Oliva Company. It was easily the biggest PCA Trade Show since Oliva was acquired by J. Cortès in 2016. One can argue this might have been the biggest Trade Show Oliva had in a decade since the launch of Melanio. A year ago, Oliva stunned the cigar world indicating it was acquiring three Honduran brands from the Reyes family: Cuba Aliados, Puros Indios, and Roly. Just before the Trade Show, Oliva relaunched the Cuba Aliados brand and would stun the cigar world a second time by announcing it would be turning to two third-party factories to handle production: Julio R. Eiroa's Fabrica de Puros Aladino S.A. in Honduras and Ernesto Perez-Carrillo's Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic. In addition, Oliva had other offerings including the 2022 edition of its Advent Calendar, a Melanio sampler offering, and a new cigarillo. This was a booth our team was personally very excited to cover!
