PCA 2022 Report: Oliva Cigar Co.

One of the biggest stories of the 2022 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show was Oliva Company. It was easily the biggest PCA Trade Show since Oliva was acquired by J. Cortès in 2016. One can argue this might have been the biggest Trade Show Oliva had in a decade since the launch of Melanio. A year ago, Oliva stunned the cigar world indicating it was acquiring three Honduran brands from the Reyes family: Cuba Aliados, Puros Indios, and Roly. Just before the Trade Show, Oliva relaunched the Cuba Aliados brand and would stun the cigar world a second time by announcing it would be turning to two third-party factories to handle production: Julio R. Eiroa's Fabrica de Puros Aladino S.A. in Honduras and Ernesto Perez-Carrillo's Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic. In addition, Oliva had other offerings including the 2022 edition of its Advent Calendar, a Melanio sampler offering, and a new cigarillo. This was a booth our team was personally very excited to cover!

PCA 2022 Report: Ferio Tego (Audio)

This year marked the second trade show for Michael Herklots and Brendon Scott’s Ferio Tego company, but in reality, this was the first trade show where the company was taking orders on the Trade Show floor. Last year, Ferio Tego was connecting with customers. Since then, the company has brought the former Nat Sherman brands of Metropolitan, Timeless, and Ancora back to market. It also introduced its own eponymous flagship line. It was an enormous amount of work for a small company, and judging by the activity at the Ferio Tego booth, it was well worth it. As Ferio Tego goes forward, it embraces the heritage of its legacy brands and the future with its Ferio Tego brand. This year, Ferio Tego celebrates ten years of the Timeless brand with Timeless Ten Years and moves forward with the second release of Ferio Tego Elegancia and Ferio Tego Generoso.

PCA 2022 Report: Don Kiki Cigars - K by Karen Berger (Audio)

Many know the name of the late Don Kiki Berger, who built a vertically operated tobacco operation during the cigar boom. Today Kiki's wife Karen Berger heads up this operation that includes a factory, farms, a retail operation, and the brands of Don Kiki Cigars and K by Karen Berger. This year, Don Kiki/K by Karen Berger marks 25 years that the Bergers have been in the cigar business. As a result, a special, limited premium offering was introduced known as the K by Karen Berger 25th Anniversary by AJ Fernandez. It's a collaboration that is being produced at AJ Fernandez's factory, but it includes tobaccos from both the Fernandez and Berger farms. It's also described as the most full-bodied blend in the company's portfolio to date.

The company is owned by Howard Gumbs Jr. and already has several brands in the portfolio including Magic Stick, Black Moses, and the All Pro Series. The All Pro Series has Gumbs partnering with two of his friends, Ike Taylor and Leon Searcy who have had stellar NFL careers. This year each of the brands in the portfolio saw something new come to the Trade Show. If there was a theme with this year’s offerings by Howard G, it would be adding Connecticut Shade offerings to several of the brands. This year, we found Howard G Cigars to be one of the revelations of the show. The company brings an excellent portfolio of cigars, and some wonderful people behind the brand.

PCA 2022 Report: Alec Bradley Cigar Co. (Audio)

For the Cigar Coop Coalition's Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show coverage, we like to come up with a theme for our reports. This year's theme for Alec Bradley Cigar Co is "Experimental" as considerable attention was given to its Experimental Series. The Experimental Series is just that - it allows Alec Bradley to experiment and have a sandbox for some innovative projects. Leading the way this year is the Alec Bradley Double Broadleaf. It not only marks a foray into Broadleaf blends for Alec Bradley, but it incorporates Honduran-grown Broadleaf - something we haven't seen much of.  There is a 7 x 70 line extension coming to the first two installments of the Experimental Series, the Project 40 and Project 40 Maduro. Finally going back to the company's roots, Alec Bradley's mystery PCA Exclusive offering was unveiled with the New Mix Classics Sampler.

PCA 2022 Report: Casa de Sueños (Audio)

One of the new exhibitors at the 2022 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show is a company called Casa de Sueños. The company itself is not completely new, Casa de Sueños was formed by a group of cigar enthusiasts based in California called the LG Cigar Club. They hooked up with the De Los Reyes factory in the Dominican Republic to produce their brands. The name "Casa de Sueños" translates to House of Dreams which is appropriate for this group that fulfilled a dream of launching a cigar company. This year the company was a part of the family of companies that made up the De Los Reyes booth. It provided an opportunity for the brand to showcase their three lines: El Soñador, Fantasia and Angelito.
